Periodontal therapy

  • Around 70% of adults suffer from gum disease (periodontal disease), most without even knowing it until its late stages. If left too late it can be difficult to treat and loss of gum tissue and jaw bone is irreversible and can lead to eventual tooth loss.

  • All adults that have a dental checkup are also screened for periodontal disease. We measure the amount of gum and bone loss around the teeth, check for inflammation/bleeding, loose teeth, and areas with bacterial or calcified buildup.

  • Periodontal therapy involves gently cleansing and debriding the teeth and gums, and tailoring an oral hygiene routine to keep disease-causing bacteria at bay, allowing the gums and surrounding bone to heal and stabilise.

  • Treating periodontal disease not only is beneficial for keeping your teeth, but the bacteria that cause gum disease are also implicated in other systemic diseases like Alzheimer's, heart disease, arthritis, stroke, diabetes and pre-term birth.

  • In some cases, we may recommend a referral to a periodontal spoecialist to manage severe cases.
